부활의 자연과학적 서술

(차라리) 영혼이 몸을 움직이는 것처럼 보이기에 영혼이 스스로를 움직이는 것같은 방식으로 몸을 움직인다고 말하는 것이 합리적일 것이다. 그렇다고 한다면 반대로 영혼도 몸의 운동과 같은 종류의 운동을 한다고 말하는 것은 옳을 것이다. 따라서, 몸은 장소운동을 하며 이와 마찬가지로 영혼도 몸 전체에 따라 또는 부분들에 따라 운동할 것이다. 만약 이것이 가능하다면, 육체를 떠났던 영혼이 다시 돌아오는 것 또한 가능할 것이고 죽은 생물들이 부활하는 것이 가능할 것이다.

ἔτι δ' εἰ μὲν ἄνω κινήσεται, πῦρ ἔσται, εἰ δὲ κάτω, γῆ· τούτων γὰρ τῶν σωμάτων αἱ κινήσεις αὗται· ὁ δ' αὐτὸς λόγος καὶ περὶ τῶν μεταξύ. ἔτι δ' ἐπεὶ φαίνεται κινοῦσα τὸ σῶμα, ταύτας εὔλογον κινεῖν τὰς κινήσεις ἃς καὶ αὐτὴ κινεῖται. εἰ δὲ τοῦτο, καὶ ἀντιστρέψασιν εἰπεῖν ἀληθὲς ὅτι ἣν τὸ σῶμα κινεῖται, ταύτην καὶ αὐτή. τὸ δὲ σῶμα κινεῖται φορᾷ· ὥστε καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ μεταβάλλοι ἂν κατὰ τὸ σῶμα ἢ ὅλη ἢ κατὰ μόρια μεθισταμένη. εἰ δὲ τοῦτ' ἐνδέχεται, καὶ ἐξελθοῦσαν εἰσιέναι πάλιν ἐνδέχοιτ' ἄν· τούτῳ δ' ἕποιτ' ἂν τὸ ἀνίστασθαι τὰ τεθνεῶτα τῶν ζῴων.

Further, since the soul is observed to originate movement in the body, it is reasonable to suppose that it transmits to the body the movements by which it itself is moved, and so, reversing the order, we may infer from the movements of the body back to similar movements of the soul. Now the body is moved from place to place with movements of locomotion. Hence it would follow that the soul too must in accordance with the body change either its place as a whole or the relative places of its parts. This carries with it the possibility that the soul might even quit its body and re-enter it, and with this would be involved the possibility of a resurrection of animals from the dead. <Aristotle's De Anima 406a:30-406b:5>
