눈을 시력이 있는 하나의 생물이라고 가정했을 때 그것의 영혼은 시력(시각)이다. 그것이 바로 형식으로서 눈의 실체이기 때문이다. 시력이 제거된 눈은 거짓된 조각상이거나 그려낸 눈으로서 이름만 같을 뿐 진정한 눈이 아니다.
ψυχὴ ἂν ἦν αὐτοῦ ἡ ὄψις· αὕτη γὰρ οὐσία ὀφθαλμοῦ ἡ κατὰ τὸν λόγον (ὁ δ' ὀφθαλμὸς ὕλη ὄψεως), ἧς ἀπολειπούσης οὐκέτ' ὀφθαλμός, πλὴν ὁμωνύμως, καθάπερ ὁ λίθινος καὶ ὁ γεγραμμένος.
Suppose that the eye were an animal-sight would have been its soul, for sight is the substance or essence of the eye which corresponds to the formula, the eye being merely the matter of seeing; when seeing is removed the eye is no longer an eye, except in name-it is no more a real eye than the eye of a statue or of a painted figure. <Aristotle's De Anima 412b:20>
